re:publica Talk - Cory Doctorow
@BerlinSaloon
Buffalo Billiards
201 East 6th Street

In this re:publica talk, bestselling sci-fi author Cory Doctorow discusses Article 13 and the Copyright Directive, which is arguably the most potentially dangerous piece of internet regulation ever proposed in a democratic state. He will also have his latest book Walkaway, on hand. Walkaway is an adult science fiction novel set in our near-future, and is a story of walking away from "non-work", and surveillance and control by a brutal, immensely rich oligarchical elite; love and romance; a post-scarcity gift economy; revolution and eventual war; and a means of finally ending death.

re:publica Panel - Future of Mobility
@BerlinSaloon
Buffalo Billiards
201 East 6th Street

Hardly any area of society is undergoing as much change as urban mobility. Our cell phones take us from A to B with shared mobility services, carpooling platforms, and public transport apps. While car companies are building the next generation of connected, self-driving and fully electric vehicles, cities worldwide are putting the first autonomous vehicles on the road. The digital mobility revolution is in full swing.
But how is access ensured for all members of society? Who benefits from the data generated? And where is the journey going? Let’s seek answers to these questions in the Future of Mobility panel.
Our experts include Paul Lafata, USA CEO of Daimler AG’s incubator Lab1886. Paul will share insights on new products, services, and businesses and provide a glimpse into what the mobility ecosystem of the future could look like.
Jennifer Bradley, Executive Director of the Center for Urban Innovation at the Aspen Institute, will share what it takes for urban spaces to innovate and become fully inclusive to reach those communities who need access to mobility most. Across the pond in Berlin, Germany, BerlKönig is the new carpooling service on the block, running largely on e-vehicles. Hear from Valerie von der Tann, General Manager at BerlKönig’s ViaVan, on the environmental impact that city-wide on-demand carpooling can have.
Lastly, Markus Beckedahl, Editor-in-Chief at Netzpolitik.org, Germany's most known media outlet on digital rights issues, sheds light on the caveats of collecting urban and mobility data and the privacy trade-offs of mobility “one-stop-shops”.

Join us for an exciting discussion around the mobility of tomorrow.
This panel is a partner session with BerlinPartner, Lab1886and the Wunderbar Together Initiative and is hosted by re:publica at Sequencer Tour Austin.

How to achieve a gender balance in the music sector
@German Haus
The Graeber House, 410 East 6th Street

Comparing aims and measures in Europe and the U.S. Keychange aims to accelerate change and create a better more inclusive music industry for present and future generations. At the same time the Recording Academy of Grammy Awards formed a Diversity & Inclusion Task Force to examine barriers and biases affecting women and other underrepresented voices in the music industry. Reeperbahn Festival is presenting a panel discussion with representatives from both initiatives to talk about German/European vs American perspectives, possibilities and challenges. What are the aims and measures concerning gender equality in the music business in Germany/Europe and in the U.S.? What are the starting situations and how can a solution look like? Let’s learn from each other and take the next step into a global future.

The session is part of the Year of German-American Friendship (“Deutschlandjahr USA”), a comprehensive and collaborative initiative funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, implemented by the Goethe-Institut, and with support from the Federation of German Industries (BDI)

The Future of Us: Exploring Immersive Media and Creating New Social Experiences
@German Haus
The Graeber House, 410 East 6th Street

For some time now, Immersive Technology has been anticipated to be at that magical tipping point, becoming part of mainstream entertainment choices and even daily routines.
However, Immersive media is not yet as frictionless or ubiquitous as consumers want it to be, and the industry still faces a core challenge in the quest to advance immersive technology, indicating that we might not only be looking for compelling immersive content but, in fact, for the re-creation of social experiences when consuming and also producing creative content. Our panel, featuring some of the most forward-thinking minds in the field, will explore and engage on this new frontier and discuss use cases, new hardware, and the future of audience engagement in fields as diverse as games, film, VR and mixed reality, sound and music, advertising and brand activation, or visual arts.  Let Technology step out of the way and the future of immersive experiences take center stage.

The session is part of the Year of German-American Friendship (“Deutschlandjahr USA”), a comprehensive and collaborative initiative funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, implemented by the Goethe-Institut, and with support from the Federation of German Industries (BDI).
